Animation Archives panel

At the upcoming Society for Animation Studies Conference at Padova University, 3-7 July 2017, Mette Peters will take part in a panel about Animation Archives, together with Jim Walker (lecturer) and Rebekah Taylor (archivist). Walker and Taylor are both affiliated with the University for the Creative Arts (UK) guardian of the Bob Godfrey Archive.

While the academic study of animation has expanded, consideration of its cultural and archival heritage is less well developed or articulated. The diversity of repositories with elements of animation material is significant, the panel considers different approaches towards identifying and studying these collections. In particular it considers how to conserve the materiality of animation when some of these elements are by nature transitory and impermanent and how these elements extend the parameters of animation researchers. In addition the panel considers how archive materials may support and redirect our understanding of animation, the production history and processes of filmmaking.
